President Trump asked for evidence about Comey
(Baonghean.vn) US lawmakers are asking President Donald Trump to provide recordings of conversations with recently dismissed FBI director James Comey.
Some US lawmakers such as Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the White House needed to "come clean" about the existence of the recordings, while declaring that Trump's destruction of the recordings was a violation of the law.
Senators Charles Schumer and Lindsey Graham demanded the recordings be turned over. |
The comments came after Mr Trump tweeted earlier with a warning message to former FBI director James Comey.
"James Comey better hope there are no recordings between me and him before he starts talking to the press," President Trump shared on his personal Twitter page. The White House has not confirmed or denied the existence of the recordings.
Schumer has been the most vocal on the issue, repeatedly warning that Senate Democrats will refuse to elect a new FBI director until a special prosecutor is appointed to investigate allegations of Russian interference in last year’s election. The FBI is investigating allegations of collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
“If there is no tape, Mr. Trump should apologize to Mr. Comey and the entire American people for deceiving them.”
Meanwhile, Senator Graham also added that President Trump's Twitter post was "inappropriate" and asked the president to "step aside and let the investigation continue".
