Hot: At least 5 people died in two consecutive explosions in Jakarta

Indonesian media simultaneously reported that two explosions on the evening of May 24 occurred consecutively, about 5 minutes apart, at a Tranjakarta bus rapid transit station in Kampung Melayu, east of the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

According to Jakarta police, the first explosion occurred at 20:58 (local time). Police quickly mobilized forces to the scene, including Jakarta Police Chief Inspector M Iriawan and East Jakarta Police Chief Pol Andri Wibowo arrived at the scene, along with other special forces and the K9 bomb specialist team.

The bus station was closed and police cordoned off about 100m of the scene to assist with the investigation.

According to initial information, the explosion is believed to have come from a location about 20 meters away, behind the Transjakarta bus station, in a terminal point.

As of 10:30 p.m., police said five people had died, including the bomber, and several others were injured.

Jakarta Transportation Company chief Budi Kaliwono said he would help police investigate the incident through surveillance cameras at Transjakarta stations and expressed concern that the incident could reduce passenger numbers. Transjakarta also urged passengers to report any suspicious actions or behavior to the police.
