(Baonghean.vn) - 'If we can sell 1 can for 200 VND, we will try to pick up 1,000 or 2,000 cans to sell and get money to help students in more difficult circumstances' - said Nguyen Trung Nam, a student in a charity class.

The free charity class run by Mr. Nguyen Viet Hoc, Tan Lap hamlet, Tan Long commune, Tan Ky district has been open for many years now. In the old level 4 house, every night there are dozens of junior high school students with difficult circumstances, studying hard, under the guidance and teaching of Mr. Hoc. Photo: Chu Thanh |

One special thing about this class is that for the past 3 years, many members of the class have spent their free time on Sundays and holidays to collect scrap metal to sell and earn money to help students in more difficult circumstances. Photo: Chu Thanh |

Rain or shine, every week on a day off, a group of 5-10 students take the opportunity to spend a session picking up scrap metal on the roadside, at tile kilns, and restaurants. The scrap metal will be kept until the end of the month and then sold for money. Photo: Chu Thanh |

As the leader of the scrap collecting group and having participated in the collection for 2 years now, Nguyen Trung Nam - a student of class 8A, Nghia Hoan Secondary School, who is studying in the charity class, said: “The idea of collecting scrap was suggested to us by Mr. Hoc. At first, we collected scrap to sell for money to help our classmates, and later, we helped friends and families in more difficult circumstances. Young people do small things, if we collect 1 can and sell it for 200 VND, then if we collect 1,000 or 2,000 cans, we will have a large amount of money to help everyone.” Photo:Chu Thanh |

Mr. Nguyen Viet Hoc said that he came up with this idea with the hope of teaching students to love each other and help those in difficult circumstances. In his class, many male students, after participating in collecting cans and giving gifts to those in difficult circumstances, began to love their parents more, to share with others, to study hard and even to stop playing useless electronic games. The money earned from each time the students collected scrap metal was carefully recorded and pooled together so that they could personally give it to their friends and families in difficult circumstances. Not only did they collect scrap metal, many students also took 2,000 VND from their breakfast money each morning for about 5-10 days to help students at Ngu Hoa Secondary School (Quang Binh) during the recent floods. The total amount of money they raised that time was up to 3 million VND, not a small amount for students in rural areas. Photo: Chu Thanh |
