The motive for the incident is unclear, but Cincinnati Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Neudigate said on Twitter that “there is no indication that the incident is terrorism-related.”

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. as hundreds of people gathered at Cameo Nightlife, a nightclub that has had “problematic” past events, according to the Cincinnati Police Department. The incident comes less than a year after a shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left 49 people dead.

Initially, police said they believed there were at least two gunmen involved in the Cincinnati incident, but Neudigate later confirmed on Twitter that there was only one gunman, and that police were still trying to determine if there were any accomplices.

Hours after the shooting, the suspect was still at large, and police had not yet developed a detailed description of him, in part because witnesses were reluctant to cooperate.

Several victims in Cincinnati are in critical condition. According to Reuters, the University of Cincinnati Medical Center received eight people injured in the shooting, one of whom is in life-threatening condition.

According to Cameo Nightlife's Facebook page, the nightclub was hosting an event for students 18 and older at the time of the shooting. The club is a large, one-story structure located 11 kilometers southeast of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio's second largest city with a population of more than 2 million.
