(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, Nghi Loc farmers are speeding up the production of 100 hectares of summer-autumn watermelon.

Nghi Long is one of the localities with the largest area of ​​summer-autumn watermelon cultivation in the district. Along with harvesting spring peanuts, farmers are currently focusing on planting 45 hectares of watermelon, (an increase of 5 hectares compared to the same period last year).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mui in Hamlet 13, Nghi Long Commune, one of the households with the largest melon growing area in the commune, said: This year, her family produced 9 sao of both watermelon and cantaloupe. For convenience in care, the family planted in many batches, each batch 20 days apart.

Ms. Mui shared: “Last year, on average, 1 sao of summer-autumn watermelon brought in nearly 10 million VND after 2 months. This year, my family planted 9 sao. To speed up the progress, in the past few days, my family has mobilized all the human resources to go to the fields to focus on planting and bringing water into the fields so that the plants can quickly take root and grow.”

This summer-autumn crop of 2017, the whole Nghi Loc district produced 100 hectares of summer-autumn watermelon. Mainly the melon varieties: Phu Dong melon and Thai melon, An Tuyen red sun watermelon...

Watermelon is only suitable for sandy fields with active water sources and fast drainage systems. Therefore, the watermelon growing area of ​​Nghi Loc is mainly concentrated in the communes of Nghi Long, Nghi Truong, Nghi Thinh, Nghi Hop, Nghi Khanh, Nghi Thuan, Nghi Trung, Nghi Thach.

Watermelon is a high-yield crop. The time from planting to harvest is within 2 months. To ensure a successful summer-autumn crop, entering the production season, the Department of Agriculture has advised the District People's Committee to direct localities to deploy internal irrigation traffic, dredge canals to clear the flow, ensuring good drainage for summer-autumn crops. In addition, some localities have also proposed incentive mechanisms for people in production.

Mr. Dong Thanh Binh - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Loc district said: "To strive to close the second summer-autumn watermelon area by June 10, the district People's Committee directed communes and towns to focus on closely following the district's plan to deploy summer-autumn crop production in line with the actual situation of the locality. With the seasonal solution of "the sooner the better", but must ensure flexibility, safety, and limit damage caused by drought and floods"./.
