Speaking to 2,500 sailors aboard the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier at the US naval base in Yokosuka, Tokyo Bay, Pence said he was there because “storm clouds are gathering on the horizon” in Northeast Asia.

The US Vice President stressed: “North Korea is the most urgent and dangerous threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region.”

However, the US Vice President declared: “We will defeat any attack and respond strongly and effectively to any attack with conventional or nuclear weapons from North Korea.”

Pence’s remarks came after a senior North Korean official warned that Pyongyang had no intention of giving up its missile program, pledging to test missiles weekly and threatening “all-out war” if Washington took any action against the country. The remarks deeply alarmed U.S. allies, including Japan and South Korea, who would face dire consequences if North Korea took any provocative action.

The US Vice President's trip to Northeast Asia is aimed at reassuring its Northeast Asian allies that the US will defend Pyongyang's continued missile development program and its readiness to conduct a sixth nuclear test. According to Mr. Pence, the threat from this administration is increasing.
