Taking advantage of the potential and advantages of their land, many families in Nghia Tho commune, a commune classified under the 135 program of Nghia Dan district, have developed a model of raising cattle in confinement, contributing to poverty reduction and income improvement. In particular, since the introduction of programs supporting people in commercial livestock farming, families have utilized their land to grow grass and fatten their livestock.

Mr. Le Hong Truong from Tan Tho hamlet boldly borrowed capital from the bank to invest in building barns for raising cattle. Initially, he only raised 3 pairs of breeding cows, but now, his barn consistently maintains a herd of 25-30 cows, including 13 breeding cows. With one calve per year, his family earns over 150 million VND annually from selling calves.

“Previously, our family only raised cattle on a small scale. To increase our income, we had to raise them in larger quantities to create a marketable product. Raising cattle in confinement requires good hygiene in the barns and full vaccination according to the instructions of veterinary officers. Besides the money from selling the cattle, our family also earns 30 million VND annually from selling manure,” Mr. Truong shared.

Meanwhile, Hoang Ngoc Kien's family cultivates 1 hectare of grass to fatten their herd of cattle. After deducting expenses, his family earns 40-50 million VND annually from commercial cattle farming.

To date, the total number of buffalo and cattle in Nghia Tho has grown significantly, with 650 cows and 700 buffaloes. Mr. Truong Cong Canh, Secretary of the Nghia Tho Commune Party Committee, said: “The model of fattening buffalo and cattle in enclosed pens has proven highly effective economically for the people. In reality, the weight of buffalo and cattle raised in pens increases rapidly thanks to a good diet, resulting in higher resistance to disease and fewer illnesses, thus contributing to increased income for the people.”
