Extremely unique features of the new mini torpedo

It took just one year for Saab to research and develop a new torpedo at the request of the Swedish Ministry of Defense.

A few days ago, the navyrecognition.com portal officially announced that this new weapon was introduced at the Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) 2017 exhibition, held in Bremen, Germany.

The torpedo was developed under the Lightweight Torpedo project.

Previously, in 2016, the Swedish Ministry of Defense requested research and development of this new torpedo under the name of the Lightweight Torpedo project. To complete this project, the Swedish Ministry of Defense provided a budget of about 1.53 billion kroner (equivalent to 175 million USD) to the Saab company.

The first test of this new torpedo is planned to take place in the fall of 2017 and mass production will begin by 2024.

“The project is currently underway. This fall we will conduct sea trials of the new torpedo.

Although we created this new torpedo on order from the Swedish Ministry of Defence, we are ready to supply them to other countries,” said Anne-Marie Ves, head of Saab Dynamics underwater systems.

Interceptor Torpedo

The official name for this new type of torpedo has not yet been determined. This type of torpedo is relatively small in size but has many different special features.

According to researchers and developers, this type of torpedo can be equipped for submarines, surface ships and even aircraft. In addition, this torpedo can be used to intercept other types of torpedoes.

This new torpedo is a guided torpedo and can reach speeds of 40 knots (equivalent to 74 km/h), allowing it to be used against all types of submarines and surface ships.

Due to its small size and high maneuverability, it allows its use against all types of surface ships and submarines. Furthermore, due to its small size, it can be used in straits and shallow waters.

The torpedo's target destruction range is about 20 km and can operate at a maximum depth of 300 m.

Whether it is successful or not and the real power of this torpedo will be revealed after the completion of the test. However, the rapid and strong development of modern submarines of countries around the world has promoted the development of powerful underwater torpedo technology.

Not only Sweden, many countries in the world are taking this issue seriously and focusing on researching and developing them, especially Russia and the US.

Another reason for the emergence of many new types of torpedoes is the tense regional situation in recent years, for example in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, South China Sea and Arctic, the risk of military conflict in these seas is very high and in this case anti-submarine torpedoes will be the most preferred.
