Breaking into a gold shop, the young carpenter stole all the property. On the way home, he hid it and showed off his achievements to his acquaintances.

During the trial opened at the Hanoi People's Court on May 22, Ly Van Minh (18 years old, from Tuyen Quang) stated that he worked as a carpenter at a furniture store near a gold shop in Hoang Mai district.

On June 14, 2016, at 11 p.m., Minh put the hammer, nails, pliers, chisel, screwdriver, mask, gloves, and shirt in a bag and walked to the gold shop to investigate. He climbed over the wall to break in, and after struggling to pry open the door, Minh climbed onto the roof, removed the tiles, cut through the plastic ceiling, and crawled down.

To avoid being detected by the camera, Minh wrapped his shirt around his head and covered his face with a mask. That day, the thief stole jewelry worth about one billion VND.

Four days later, Minh put the evidence in a cardboard box and took it back to his hometown to hide. On the way, he happened to meet an acquaintance so he opened it up to show off his "achievement" and the incident was discovered by the authorities.

At the trial, Minh said he committed the crime because he had no money to send back home. The victim asked the panel of judges to consider reducing Minh's sentence because he had received all of his property back.

The panel of judges determined that the defendant was under the age of majority at the time of the crime and was an ethnic minority, so they sentenced him to 6 years in prison, much lower than the 13-14 years recommended by the prosecutor./.
