Russia deploys rare aircraft squadron for 'Victory Day'

Russia will deploy a variety of aircraft to take part in a spectacular display above Red Square during the Victory Day parade on May 9.

According to Sputniks, a squadron of five aircraft of the long-range aviation will perform a formation display above Red Square. Leading the flight will be the Tu-16 strategic bomber, codenamed "White Swan".

Next up will be the legendary aerobatic team - the Russian Knights, consisting entirely of new Su-30SM fighters.

The air display is part of next week’s military parade. The opening appearance will be a group of Mi-26 and Mi-8 helicopters, flying 150m above Red Square at speeds of 200km/h.

Strategic and military aircraft will also fly at an altitude of 300-500m at a speed of 500km/h. Tu-160s and Il-78 transport aircraft will demonstrate aerial refueling. Meanwhile, pilots from the Lipetsk Aviation Center will perform with Su-35s, Su-34s and Su-27s.

In total, 72 planes and helicopters will take part in the parade. The air crews are scheduled to take part in two rehearsals in the skies over Moscow on May 4 and 7.

The Tu-160, is one of Russia's most formidable weapons. It is a heavy strategic bomber/missile aircraft. It is designed to strike targets around the globe with conventional and nuclear weapons.

Tu-160 bombers have participated in the fight against terrorism in Syria.
