Ford is being sued by more than 7,000 car owners over a faulty Powershift transmission.

For automobiles, the gearbox always plays a crucial role. It is the intermediate component responsible for transmitting and controlling traction to the wheels.

Therefore, it's obvious that a bad transmission will render the entire car useless. This is exactly the case Ford is facing, as its Powershift transmission has led to a large-scale lawsuit filed by over 7,000 owners of Focus and Fiesta models in the US.

According to the lawsuit filed in court, the Powershift transmissions in these vehicles frequently experience vibration, gear slippage, jerking, delayed gear changes, excessive wear, slow acceleration/deceleration, and even sudden acceleration in some cases. The vehicles most affected are the 2012-2016 Focus and the 2011-2016 Fiesta (mostly sedans). In fact, many of these issues have been reported by consumers in Vietnam, particularly on online communities like OTOFUN.

Technically, the Powershift is Ford's first dual-clutch transmission. Therefore, many believe that its design flaws are understandable. However, when these problems become unbearable for consumers, the manufacturer inevitably faces complaints.

For the reasons mentioned above, Stern Law, the firm representing the plaintiff in this case, asserts that Ford is responsible for the design and manufacturing flaws in its Powershift transmission. Stern Law also points out that the shortcomings of this transmission will seriously affect vehicle safety, cause consumers to spend money on repairs, and reduce the value of their vehicles.

For its part, Ford declined to comment on the lawsuit, only stating that it remains "committed to delivering the best quality vehicles to consumers."

Back in 2016, Ford Vietnam also recalled 8,355 vehicles in the domestic market due to a transmission-related defect, including 2,150 EcoSport vehicles, 4 out of 179 Fiesta vehicles, and 2,010 Focus vehicles (along with some imported Fiesta models). However, this recall was only to update the software to help warn and detect early electrical circuit faults in the transmission control unit.
