Not every country in the world has the capability to independently increase the range of its BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher like Vietnam.

| Specifically, the BM-21M-1 multiple rocket launcher has the capability to automatically calculate, adjust, and control the firing elements quickly and accurately; it integrates a communication and data transmission system to ensure combat operation in all terrain and weather conditions, day and night. Previously, the crew of the BM-21 multiple rocket launcher consisted of 5 people; now, with the BM-21M-1, the crew is reduced to 4 people. The pre-firing preparation time for the BM-21 was 14 minutes; now, the preparation time for the BM-21M-1 is only 1.5 minutes. Image source: QPVN |

| The BM-21 multiple rocket launcher's range and trajectory control was previously semi-manual or manual. After being upgraded to the BM-21M-1, this control can now be automatic, semi-manual, or manual. Similarly, while the BM-21 previously calculated firing elements manually, the BM-21M-1 now performs this calculation automatically. (Image source: QPVN) |

| With these two major upgrades: increased mobility and extended range, the already dangerous offensive capabilities of the BM-21 Grad have become even more formidable. It remains an indispensable firepower for the Vietnamese artillery. Image source: QPVN |

| The BM-21 launcher is equipped with a 40-barrel 122mm launcher mounted on a Ural-375D or Ural-4320 6x6 wheeled transport vehicle (in service in 1976). All 40 rounds can be fired in just 20 seconds, but can also be fired individually or in bursts a few seconds apart. Reloading is entirely manual and takes about 10 minutes. | A battalion fully equipped with BM-21 rocket launchers can fire up to 720 rounds simultaneously in 20 seconds at targets over a wide area, making it highly effective against infantry and light armored formations, as well as for destroying semi-fortified trench systems. (Image source: Wikipedia) |

| Over the years, in addition to research projects on upgrading T-54B tanks, B72 anti-tank missiles, and other armored vehicles, the General Department of Engineering has also actively implemented many projects to improve and manufacture new equipment for artillery units. Through tireless efforts, the General Department of Engineering, in coordination with factories and enterprises throughout the army, has successfully manufactured 105mm self-propelled artillery on Ural-375D or Ural-432007-10 chassis. Furthermore, the General Department of Engineering has directly supervised the successful improvement of the BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher. (Image source: QPVN) |

| The BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher is one of the most powerful and destructive weapons currently in service with the artillery forces of the Vietnam People's Army. This type of artillery can destroy enemy infantry, defensive fortifications, and armored vehicles over a very large area, with incredibly devastating destructive power. | However, having been developed using technology from the 1960s, the BM-21 Grad also exhibits numerous shortcomings in modern warfare. Therefore, the General Department of Engineering has directed relevant agencies to implement a series of upgrade and modernization measures. To date, many positive results have been achieved. | Specifically, we have completed the project to increase the range of rockets equipped on the BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher systems. This means the Grad's range will no longer be limited to 20km but will be much further. Unfortunately, the People's Army Newspaper Online did not provide detailed information on this project. | However, the Russian Grad missile versions have now been upgraded with new types of missiles that can reach 30km (9M218 missile) or 40km (9M521 missile). Perhaps the capabilities of Vietnam's extended-range missiles could also be based on these types of missiles. (Image source: People's Army Newspaper) |
