On July 11, 1995, the leaders of Vietnam and the United States announced to the world that the two countries had officially normalized relations, putting the past behind them to open a new chapter in the history of the two countries. In 2001, the first Vietnamese students received scholarships to study in the US. By 2016, Vietnam ranked 6th in the number of international students studying in the US. In the 2015-2016 school year, there were 21,403 Vietnamese students studying in the US, accounting for 2.1% of the total number of international students in the country (an increase of 14.3% compared to 2015). On May 31, US President Donald Trump will welcome Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to the White House. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc is also the first ASEAN leader to visit the White House since Mr. Trump became president. The two sides are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation issues.
