Will North Korea turn the US into a 'continent of ashes'?

(Baonghean.vn) - The head of the Korean People's Liberation Army's Strategic Forces (KPA) stated that the US testing of Pyongyang's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) interceptor system is a "major provocation." According to this commander, the US has conducted three ICBM interception tests to date.

Pyongyang believes that this provocative move demonstrates that Washington has reached the final stage of preparing for a nuclear war with North Korea. The military commander emphasized that, in this context, North Korea's increased missile and nuclear activities, as well as its military forces, are entirely logical.

According to the KPA report, no matter how actively the Pentagon builds a powerful missile defense system, it cannot prevent a nuclear attack by the KPA aimed at "turning Washington into ashes."

On May 30th, the United States successfully intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time, a new step in countering North Korean threats. The Ground-Based Missile Defense (GMD) system, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, successfully neutralized a simulated ICBM launched from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Test Range in the Marshall Islands.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on June 2nd once again tightened sanctions against North Korea. Accordingly, the UNSC added four organizations and 14 individuals to the sanctions list following a series of ballistic missile tests. This sanctions proposal was approved after five weeks of negotiations between the United States and China, and is the first sanctions against North Korea under US President Donald Trump.

The new sanctions would freeze the assets of the blacklisted organizations, as well as prohibit travel for the individuals involved. This is the minimum measure the Security Council could approve.

The sanctions list includes Koryo Bank, the North Korean military's strategic missile forces, and the head of North Korea's overseas intelligence operations.
