Germany narrowly beat Australia after a score chase
The reigning World Cup champions only managed a 3-2 win in their opening Group B match of the Confederations Cup.

Germany had a strong start, but it was Australia who made the match unpredictable. After equalizing 1-1 in the 41st minute, the Asian champions continued to chase the "big guys" by reducing the score to 2-3 in the 58th minute. Thanks to their experience and superior class, Germany maintained a one-goal lead until the end of the match.

Compared to the chase that took place in the middle of the match, the opening period was when Germany showed their best strength. In the fifth minute, the reigning World Cup champions opened the scoring with a cross from Julian Brandt and a tap-in from Lars Stindl. If Sandro Wagner had not missed two consecutive chances, Germany could have gone 3-0 up.

After a narrow win in the opening match, Germany finished second in Group B with the same three points and a lower goal difference than Chile. In the next round, the two teams will meet directly to determine the leading position.
Meanwhile, Australia will likely pick up points from their remaining match against Cameroon.
