US House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said on May 22 that former FBI Director James Comey wants to speak with Robert Mueller before testifying publicly, Reuters reported. Mueller is the special prosecutor investigating ties between Russia and President Donald Trump's election campaign.

A committee aide said it was unclear when the hearing, scheduled for May 24, would be rescheduled.

President Trump fired Comey on May 9. After reports emerged that Trump had asked Comey to stop investigating his advisers, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein hired Mueller as special prosecutor to lead the investigation.

At a press conference on May 18, Trump denied that he had asked Comey to stop the Russia investigation as reported by the media. "This is simply the greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history," Trump said. The phrase "witch hunt" implies a deliberate attempt to find fault with an opponent.
