Centrist candidate Macron won a total of 20,753,797 votes, while his opponent Le Pen won 10,644,118 votes. The absentee rate was 25.44%, the highest rate since the 1969 presidential election.

A day earlier, the French Interior Ministry announced the number of blank or invalid ballots, accounting for 9% of all registered voters, compared to 2% in the first round of the election. Together with the rate of absentees, 1 in 3 voters did not choose anyone in the second round. This year's election was a surprise because both of France's traditional major parties could not advance to the second round./.
