Searching for the mob that vandalized the house of the commune police chief

The fact that dozens of people surrounded and vandalized the house of the police chief of Thach Bang commune (Loc Ha district) on the night of April 2nd is considered by the investigation agency to have signs of the crime of intentionally damaging property.

According to investigation documents, at around 9:00 p.m. on April 2, Mr. Giap and three police officers from Loc Ha district were surrounded by a number of people while resolving a fight at a coffee shop in Thach Bang commune.

Authorities said four police officers were surrounded by an agitated crowd, injuring one officer. Giap had to fire warning shots with rubber bullets to restore order.

Many people came and destroyed the property in Mr. Giap's house.

Police said that at around 10pm the same day, members of the crowd came to Mr. Giap's house, surrounded it, vandalised and destroyed some property. They also went to the Loc Ha district police headquarters and the Thach Bang commune People's Committee and dispersed after about 15 minutes.

In April, Ha Tinh police also initiated a case of Disturbing public order and Illegal detention to investigate the case of about 2,000 people carrying banners and slogans to the People's Committee of Loc Ha district to complain about compensation for a marine environmental incident, injuring a police officer that occurred 10 days ago.

Ha Tinh is one of the localities that suffered heavy damage.marine environmental incidentcaused by Formosa Ha Tinh Company in April 2016. The company then transferred 500 million USD in compensation for the damage. Ha Tinh has received temporary funding from the Government and is paying compensation to ship owners and workers affected by the incident by classifying the level of damage and paying cash directly.

However, people in some districts such as Loc Ha and Ky Anh town did not agree with this compensation and complained many times to local authorities.

Previously, on April 13, Loc Ha District Police (Ha Tinh) initiated a case of Property Destruction (or intentional damage to property) occurring at the house of Mr. Nguyen Van Giap, Chief of Police of Thach Bang Commune, according to Article 143 of the Penal Code.
