At least 26 people were injured, four seriously, when a China Eastern Airlines flight from Paris to Kunming passed through turbulence.

On June 18, China Eastern Airlines flight MU774 encountered severe turbulence while en route from Paris to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, southern China.

The plane suffered two severe jolts and several lighter jolts over about 10 minutes, Xinhua said. Some passengers suffered broken bones, scalp abrasions and other soft tissue injuries.

China's state news agency said some passengers' heads and shoulders hit the luggage compartments as the plane lurched. Some of the compartments collapsed, causing luggage to fall on passengers.

"I was on that flight and I felt like I wouldn't come back alive," one passenger was quoted as saying on Weibo, the South China Morning Post reported. "Many people were injured, many of whom were not wearing seat belts."

China Eastern Airlines later issued a statement saying the Airbus A330 had landed safely in Kunming. It also said it was vital that passengers fasten their seat belts as the plane descended.

Last week, a China Airlines flight to Shanghai was forced to return to Sydney after a technical problem left a large hole in the engine casing. The captain of the flight reported problems with the Airbus 330 about an hour after takeoff. Passengers reported a burning smell on board.
