Russian Defense Ministry accidentally revealed the 'weak point' of the Armata super tank
Although Russia claims that no ammunition can defeat the Armata, it has accidentally revealed the weak point of this super tank line.
Armata fragile
In a recent interview with TASS, a representative of the Uralvagonzavod Company confirmed that the T-14 Armata tanks are being mass-produced according to the order of the Russian Ministry of Defense. They can withstand and survive all types of anti-tank ammunition in the world today.
This representative affirmed that the T-14 Armata tank's protective armor can withstand all types of 100-150mm anti-tank ammunition. Even with explosive reactive armor (ERA) with holes containing explosives to detonate against the deep drilling ability of the attacking warhead, the T-14 Armata tank can neutralize the US 120mm M829 depleted uranium warheads.

As for armor-piercing bullets, Russian experts can confirm that at a distance of up to 2km, no armor-piercing bullet in the world can penetrate the frontal armor of Russian tanks.
"The Armata tank is fundamentally a completely new design. It uses unprecedented manufacturing principles, including the use of a remote-controlled solid turret. The Armata tank's multi-layered armor system is capable of withstanding all types of current anti-tank ammunition.
"Basically, the Armata tank is a homogeneous block of active protection systems, explosive reactive armor combined with a powerful remote-controlled combat module," said a representative of the Uralvagonzavod Company.
With the information that Russia made public when praising the capabilities of Armata, the manufacturer accidentally revealed the weak point of this tank line. Specifically, Armata tanks can only be safe when the enemy opens fire from a distance of 2km or more.
According to many armored vehicle experts, although modern warfare uses cutting-edge technology, most tank battles or battles between tanks and portable anti-tank guns will still take place at ranges of less than 2km, especially in urban warfare.
And so, Russia has indirectly admitted that Armata will have little chance of survival if attacked by enemy tanks at a distance of 2km or less. If that is really the case, then there is no need for a new generation tank, any current tank line from the US, Germany, France... can turn Armata into a pile of scrap metal.
Top equipment
To ensure the safety of the Armata tank when the enemy attacks from a distance of 2km or more, this super tank is equipped with extremely modern equipment, especially the Afganit system. According to initial information revealed, the system can easily intercept armor-piercing shells (BPS) with depleted uranium cores rushing towards the target at a speed of 1.5-2 km/s.
The tests have shown excellent interception capabilities with BPS - a previously unstoppable type of ammunition, Izvestia newspaper quoted a source from the Russian Ministry of Defense as saying. Regarding the operating principle, the Russian Ministry of Defense revealed that this new detection system tracks UV photon traces in the ionized gas trail left in the air by a rocket warhead.
The system is not only capable of detecting a rocket launch, but also calculating the velocity and trajectory of the warhead, providing the comprehensive active defense system with all the data required to successfully intercept a real threat.
The Afganit uses an electronically scanned array radar and a powerful electronic warfare system capable of deflecting incoming bullets and missiles. It also has countermeasures against laser-guided weapons that interfere with enemy radio waves.
Likewise, Russian tanks equipped with the Afganit interceptor system can stop armor-piercing shells. This means that the Armata super tank equipped with the Afganit "treasure" can withstand many types of high-explosive shells.
The Afganit system is most effective when used against chemical weapons, such as grenades or rockets containing toxic chemicals. The International Institute for Strategic Studies' 2016 Military Balance report explains some of the other key features of the Afganit:
"When entering service, Armata will be the first main battle tank with an automated turret design and the Afganit active protection system. The perfect Afganit shield will neutralize attacks from guided missiles, anti-tank shoulder-fired weapons, grenade launchers... especially armor-piercing bullets."
