Watch clip of landslide risk at Chau Binh drainage canal:
Chau Binh drainage canal is a component of the Mong village irrigation reservoir project running along Chau Binh commune (Quy Chau). Basically, when planning the construction, the Project Management Board has completed compensation and site clearance for households subject to resettlement. Photo: Nhat Lan
However, after the canal was formed, 4 more households in Chau Binh commune had houses and gardens located next to the canal, which are all locations at risk of landslides when it rains. In the photo is the house of Mr. Kim Van Dai (Binh 3 village) only about 6m from the canal bank. Photo: Dao Tuan
Ban Mong Project Management Board and consulting unitdetermined: Location 1 from K2+557.1 to K2+600.0 has Mr. Kim Van Dai's house (Ban Binh 3), the distance from the edge of the house to the edge of Chau Binh drainage canal is 6.0 (m) on the right bank; location 2 from K3+100.0 to K3+287.17 has 3 houses including Mrs. Pham Thi Chinh's house, Mr. Ho Ba Suu's house and Mr. Ho Ba Quy's house (Ban Quynh 1) with an average distance from the edge of the house to the edge of Chau Binh drainage canal is 9.5 (m) on the right bank. Ban Mong Project Management Board and the consulting unit have determined that these are 2 locations where landslides have been and are occurring in a complex and unpredictable manner, especially when heavy rain occurs. Although it is not yet the rainy season, many sections of the canal have begun to erode, threatening the safety of households in the area. Photo: Nhat Lan
Pham Thi Chinh's family is one of four households in Chau Binh commune whose house is located in the area at risk of landslides of the drainage canal. When the government built the Chau Binh drainage canal, her family's garden and house were located right in the middle of the canal, so they had to move up. The house was built with about 800 million VND from compensation. However, after the construction was completed, the newly rebuilt house was only about 9m from the canal. Photo: Dao Tuan
Ms. Chinh said that when her family built the house in the current location, no one or agency reminded them to calculate the distance from the canal. It is not possible that the house that was just completed more than a year ago will be demolished to move further. Ms. Chinh really hopes that the relevant agency will let her know whether the current location is safe. Photo: Nhat Lan
Mr. Le Van Toan - Vice Chairman of Chau Binh Commune People's Committee affirmed that currently there are 4 households at risk of landslides, the authorities need to survey to agree on a plan: either add to the resettlement list or ensure on-site safety. Photo: Dao Tuan
