The Energy Observerand left the port in Paris on July 15, beginning a round-the-world trip that French engineers hope could revolutionize maritime technology, according to Sputnik News.
The ship produces its own energy through solar panels, wind turbines and a hydrogen fuel cell system. Energy Observerand uses solar and wind energy during the day while hydrogen fuel will power the ship at night, created through the electrolysis of seawater.
The 30.5-meter-long boat was designed in 1983 for use in ocean races. Captain Frederic Dahirel and Victorien Erussard spent $5.25 million to renovate the boat with the support of a French research institute, turning the vehicle into the Energy Observer project.
