Thu Minh: 'Gathering firewood' for 25 years, 'burning' it in 3 hours

Thu Minh celebrated 25 years of singing with the live show Thu Minh – Fire Phoenix, which took place last night, June 24, at the National Convention Center (Hanoi).

Thu Minh was born on an autumn morning in Hanoi, which is also the reason why she was named like that. At the age of 5, she and her family moved to Saigon. She studied dancing, but pursued a singing career. At the age of 16, Thu Minh won first prize in the Ho Chi Minh City Television Singing Contest. Many people call Thu Minh the 5th diva of Vietnamese music (along with Hong Nhung, Thanh Lam, My Linh, Ha Tran). If so, she is the first diva who "dares" to do a live show in front of thousands of audiences.

Thu Minh is “willing to play” both in terms of sound and sight. It’s like a light band and a symphony orchestra are brought together on stage. A story about the phoenix being born, spreading its wings all over the world as a metaphor for the artist is “told” through contemporary dance on stage. Hits like Bay, Huong thom dieu ky, Chuong gio, Duong cong, Anh sang doi toi, Yeu minh anh, or famous cover songs like Queen of the night, Ballet of dance, Because you loved me, Hero, I will… resound, reminding Thu Minh of the years that she calls her youth. Having said that, Thu Minh admits that she is now even younger than when she was 20 years old.

People call Thu Minh the queen of dance music, but she wants to show that she is not “limited” to one genre of music. Thu Minh sang Autumn Hanoi, Kônia Tree Shadow, Autumn Rain Drops… showing the multi-faceted colors of the female singer’s voice. Trong Tan’s appearance on the show brought many surprises, because before that, many people wondered what a dance music queen would do with a red music star on stage. Trong Tan and Thu Minh sang Dung Yeu together – a pop song composed by Duong Khac Linh and Trang Phap with a semi-classical arrangement. The song made many audiences think happily that Trong Tan could set foot in showbiz.

Ho Ngoc Ha sang with Thu Minh the new song "Scared" by musician Chau Dang Khoa, before its official release. The live show's guests included Ali's students Hoang Duong, Truc Nhan, Janice Phuong, and Minh Tri, who mainly sang backup for the female singer. In addition to the music performed by musician Hoai Sa - whom Thu Minh calls her confidant because he understands her so well, Slim - V brought a combination of electronic and semi-classical music like he had never shared before.

During her live show, Thu Minh hardly shared any personal stories, both in music and in her personal life. Thu Minh's husband only appeared for a moment, holding her hand to help her step back onto the stage in a long-tailed dress. Thu Minh said that family is a corner she wants to keep for herself. Regarding the recent storms, Thu Minh once said that when an artist stands on stage, the lights shine on them, all eyes look at them, and the artist's life is cared for like that. There were stories that were exaggerated in nature, at that time she still appeared on television, still doing her work as usual. For her, that was a way to calmly get through the scandal.

The live show lasted for more than 3 hours until midnight. Before the live show took place, many people said Thu Minh was reckless when doing a show at the National Convention Center. But the audience came to see her almost full, and most of them stayed until the end of the show.
