President Poroshenko: Russia wants to use “Nord Stream-2” to take revenge on Ukraine

According to him, the gas pipeline project does not pursue economic or energy goals. But with the help of Nord Stream 2, Russia primarily wants to deprive Kiev of $2 billion that Ukraine should receive from gas transit, — Poroshenko said.

"This is a very serious threat to Ukraine that Russia is calculating," — the Ukrainian leader said.

In his opinion, Moscow wants to take revenge on Kiev after the Stockholm Arbitration Court's ruling in favor of "Naftogaz Ukraine".

The Stockholm Arbitration Court has been considering the dispute between Russia's "Gazprom" and "Naftogaz Ukraine" since June 2014. The subject of the lawsuit is contracts for gas supplies from Russia and transit through the territory of Ukraine since 2009.

The Arbitral Tribunal issued its interim decision in late May, without releasing the text. However, Ukraine asserted that the court had granted Kiev’s basic request: the cancellation of the “take or pay” contract conditions and the re-export ban, as well as a decision to review the pricing formula starting in 2014.

For its part, "Gazprom" announced that the verdict was in favor of the Russian corporation, and refuted information about the court changing the "take or pay" rule.

The “take or pay” rule means that the buyer undertakes to pay a certain amount of money for the supplied goods in all cases, regardless of the actual purchase. This provision enables suppliers of goods or services to minimize their risk in the transaction.
