China deploys aircraft carrier to Hong Kong.
China deployed its only aircraft carrier to Hong Kong to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the special administrative region.
Liaoning Carrier Strike Group
The aircraft carrier Liaoning (CV-16) departed Qingdao naval port on June 27th for training exercises. The Liaoning is expected to visit Hong Kong next week, coinciding with Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the special administrative region, Sputnik reported.
The Chinese Navy is expected to deploy three escort ships for the Liaoning, including two Type-052C/D class destroyers, one Type-054A class missile frigate, and an unspecified number of J-15 carrier-based fighter jets and various types of helicopters.
The Liaoning carrier strike group is also expected to pass through the Taiwan Strait before heading to Hong Kong. Taiwanese residents will be invited to visit the ship, a move Hong Kong media suggests is intended to "showcase China's defense capabilities."
