Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien said that currently in the process of cesarean section in the world, most doctors use spinal anesthesia. In some special cases such as mothers with heart disease, blood pressure; risk of bleeding due to placenta previa, eclampsia, preeclampsia; impaired liver, kidney, lung function, etc., general anesthesia (also known as endotracheal anesthesia) is safer for the patient.
In Vietnam, this process has been carried out until now. However, by monitoring, supervising and assessing maternal deaths in many localities, the Ministry of Health found that in some cases "the doctor thought it was okay or the mother had eaten so she still had spinal anesthesia".
“In fact, out of 10 cases of spinal anesthesia, one case may have complications like this.hypotension, bleeding, even risk of cardiac arrest, emergency care is extremely difficult, high risk of deathTherefore, for the safety of pregnant women, the Ministry of Health requires general anesthesia in special cases," said Deputy Minister Tien.
To perform general anesthesia, the patient must fast. In some cases, if they have eaten, their stomach must be drained. This is much more complicated than performing spinal anesthesia.
