The Western Command has moved a huge amount of military equipment to the southern Kunlun Mountains in Tibet, the PLA Daily, the mouthpiece of the Chinese military, reported today. The military equipment was moved late last month by road and rail, but its purpose is unclear.

China and India are currently locked in a standoff in the Doklam plateau in Bhutan. Tensions have been building since mid-June when the Chinese military sent engineers and machinery into the disputed area of Doklam to build roads. Bhutan has been protesting unsuccessfully, and has asked India to send troops to Doklam to stop China’s moves.

China Central Television earlier this week showed footage of Chinese soldiers participating in a large-scale live-fire exercise on the Tibetan Plateau. The exercise location is not far from the Doklam plateau.

Global Times, a Chinese newspaper known for its hard-line rhetoric, also published an editorial in English on July 17, warning of an "all-out confrontation" with India, raising concerns that the situation could escalate into a bloody conflict.

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishanka meanwhile asserted that New Delhi wanted a political solution to the tensions.
