Nearly one-third of the world's population is overweight or obese, and this rate is increasing, according to a survey by the Institute for Health Metrics and Statistics at the University of Washington (USA). In 2015, in 73 countries, the number of obese people had doubled compared to 1980.

Egypt leads in the number of obese adults, with 35% of adults having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (the normal range is 22-25). In the US, more than two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese. 13% of American children are obese, the highest rate in the world.

Vietnam has the lowest rate of adult obesity, at only 1.6%. Bangladesh has the lowest rate of childhood obesity, at only 1.2%.

Obesity caused 4 million deaths in 2015, accounting for 7.1% of all causes of death. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and other illnesses. Furthermore, it weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to death from influenza or other infectious diseases. According to research, the main causes of obesity are unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity.
