(Baonghean.vn)- On August 7, South Korean prosecutors requested a 12-year prison sentence for Lee Jae-Yong, Vice Chairman and successor to his father as Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who is currently on trial for bribery as part of a shocking corruption scandal in South Korea that led to the ouster of President Park Geun-hye.

At the final hearing in Mr. Lee's trial, prosecutors called him the "ultimate beneficiary" of the corruption scandal and asked the court to sentence him to 12 years in prison.

Mr. Lee, 49, is accused of bribery, corruption, perjury and other violations in connection with a political scandal that rocked South Korea in 2016 surrounding Choi Soon-sil, a close friend of Ms. Park Geun-hye.

Ms. Choi was accused of using her close relationship with President Park at the time to force domestic companies to "donate" nearly 70 million USD to two shady funds she established, using part of the funds for personal purposes. This scandal was the reason why Ms. Park Geun-hye was removed from office./.
