Nghe An: VietGAP shrimp farming earns nearly 1 billion VND/ha
(Baonghean.vn) -Many households in Loc Thuy Cooperative, Quynh Bang Commune (Quynh Luu, Nghe An) have achieved a harvest yield of 15 tons/ha/crop thanks to applying VietGAP shrimp farming, bringing in an income of about 1 billion VND.
In 2013, Mr. Hoang Xuan Tin was one of the first households to apply intensive shrimp farming according to VietGAP process. Up to now, after more than 4 years of implementing the model, Mr. Tin affirmed that thanks to clean shrimp farming, it has brought high economic efficiency. With 12 ponds, he arranged 3-4 settling ponds to treat the water source, the rest is used for shrimp farming. In the first crop of this year, with 3 ponds, he harvested 16 tons of shrimp (on average, each pond yielded 4-5 tons); after deducting expenses, he earned a profit of over 700 million VND.

"As before, when not applying VietGAP farming process, shrimp farmers often worried about the breed, feed and farming process not being guaranteed, the final harvest yield was often low at about 2 - 3 tons/pond. After applying the process, although going through many stages in controlling from breed to feed, the final harvest yield was much higher; each hectare of VietGAP shrimp farming brought in a profit of 600 - 700 million VND/year" - Mr. Tin shared.
Realizing the effectiveness of the model, up to now, Loc Thuy Cooperative has 80 hours of shrimp farming, of which 40 hectares of area apply VietGAP process implemented by 28 households. According to shrimp farming households, applying VietGAP process, the seed from the seed supplier must meet the standards, go through quarantine before being released for farming; must carefully record from the stage of importing seed, feed, pond renovation to harvesting, and post-harvest waste treatment.

"In addition to controlling the breed and feed, shrimp farmers must renovate the ponds, build settling ponds and treat the water source before and after raising or harvesting shrimp. This process helps prevent diseases that may occur in shrimp; at the same time, it guides farmers to apply new and more advanced farming methods," said Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, a shrimp farmer.
Entering the first shrimp crop this year, many households have invested hundreds of millions of VND to replace conventional bottom lining with black tarpaulin to resist UV rays, chemicals, oxidation, prevent water loss for the pond and prevent disease. Along with that, the district has attracted investment projects to build facilities to serve shrimp farming in the area with an investment of 50 billion VND.
Thanks to the application of VietGAP shrimp farming process and systematic investment in infrastructure, although the Loc Thuy cooperative has only harvested about 60% of the area in the first crop this year, the estimated output is about 70 - 80 tons; if the favorable weather lasts until the end of the year, the output can exceed 200 tons, 40 - 50 tons higher than in 2016.
