India's Border Roads Authority (BRO) plans to build two tunnels through the 4,170-meter-high Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh state, which borders China, according to India Press.

According to BRO, the tunnel project aims to help the Indian army operate more easily during winter, when heavy snowfall in the eastern Himalayas cuts off many strategic border routes.

Thanks to these two tunnels, 475 m and 1,790 m long, Indian soldiers will avoid steep slopes and dangerous curves and shorten the travel time between the army's 4th Corps headquarters in the two border towns of Tezpur and Tawang by about an hour.

The tunnels also help ensure that Highway 13, especially the 171 km stretch between Bomdila and Tawang, is accessible in all weather conditions.

BRO's project has now completed technical details and will be surveyed on site after the rainy season.
