For the first time in Hanoi, a store selling goods based on trust has appeared. Customers come in, choose their own drinks, pay according to the instructions posted on the wall, then put money and bills in a box without any waiter.

New experience

With an area of only about 20m2, this store does not look too different from other stores on the street. However, Mama Fanbox brings a completely new experience because this is the first unmanned store in Hanoi as well as in Vietnam.

Mama Fanbox's "working" equipment is very simple, just a refrigerator with all kinds of drinks, chocolate and lots of fresh cream. Coming to Mama Fanbox, customers just need to press the bell, the door will automatically open. Customers can choose their own food based on the menu posted by the restaurant. After choosing their food, customers go to the counter to pay, use the product barcode scanner, the price will be displayed on the computer and just enter the phone number and the machine will print the bill.

After that, customers put money and receipt into the plastic bag prepared by the restaurant, drop it into the payment box. Finally, customers can enjoy the products they bought at Mama Fanbox with full tables, chairs and cool air conditioning.

All instructions have been fully annotated by the owner, however, many people still do not know where to start paying. In these cases, the owner has installed a surveillance camera connected to the management center, Mama Fanbox staff will give specific instructions to customers through the speaker system, so that no one gets into trouble. After a day, the staff comes to clean up and collect the sales money from the previous day, at this time the owner will know whether the customer has paid in full or not.

Sell with trust

Dao Khanh Hiep, the owner of Mama Fanbox, shared that he spent 6 months in Japan. He found Japanese culture very interesting, with a system of unmanned stores called mini shops showing the honesty of the Japanese.

In many parts of Japan, there are no farmers. They still go to work during the day, and in their spare time they grow crops. After harvesting, they package their produce, label it with a price tag, and leave a donation box next to it. Buyers simply pay the price tag and put their money in the box. At the end of the day, on their way home from work, they stop by to take the donation box home. The Japanese proudly claim that the verb “petty theft” has almost disappeared from the dictionary.

Therefore, he decided to bring this model to Vietnam and apply it under the name Mama Fanbox - A lovely little fan box because he admired the honesty of the Japanese people and believed that he could build a unique cultural feature with Mama Chocolate's fans.

Mr. Hiep shared that the first store he opened in Lieu Giai had a capital of only over 90 million, but after only one Valentine season, he had recovered this initial capital. From there, he continued to expand, and now Mama Fanbox has a system of stores in Hanoi and Hai Phong. "The cost is low, mainly applying technology in management, with a system of 4 stores, only 2 employees are needed to guide customers in the early stages when not many people know how to use it," said Mr. Hiep.

Although the stores have brought in good profits, the owner of this chain of stores said that he does not put profit first. Mr. Hiep shared that initially, customers may come to him out of curiosity, but to make them stay, the quality of the products must be the key. Therefore, he constantly invests in innovation and research to perfect the production chain, creating the best quality products.

The most special and meaningful thing that Mama Fanbox brings is to bring “trust” to both sellers and buyers. The owner of this store said that if you want honest customers, you need to trust them first. When you give trust first, you will receive the same from your customers.

“I think that giving trust is like giving and receiving. I have great trust in my customers, I want to create a new consumer culture with them to change the way Vietnamese people perceive Vietnamese people. I want to integrate consumer culture into the product and find kind customers and spread that kindness out. There are many good people around us, they just don’t have a place to express themselves. Many people consider Fanbox as their home, they come to sweep the floor, mop the house, water the plants… which makes me feel very happy,” said Mr. Hiep.

In Vietnam, businesses are still accustomed to doing business based on the advantage of low labor costs, but that is no longer an advantage when labor costs in Vietnam are increasing. Therefore, businesses need to increase innovation and creativity to be able to produce quality, creative products and bring in greater profits. According to experts, innovation not only brings breakthrough growth to businesses but also changes the strategy of a business.
