On July 24, the High-Tech Crime Prevention Police Department (PC50) - Hanoi City Police announced that it had verified the case of spreading false rumors about a plane crash at Noi Bai airport.
The police identified the person who posted the false information on her personal Facebook page as Ms. PTM (hometown: Nho Quan, Ninh Binh, currently residing in Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi).
Based on Ms. M.'s testimony and the collected documents, PC50 determined that on the afternoon of July 20, Ms. M. read information and pictures of the plane crash on social media. Because it was raining heavily, Ms. M. thought it was true and downloaded 5 pictures of the plane crash to her phone.
Ms. M. saw a photo of a location similar to the area near Noi Bai airport and posted it on her personal Facebook with the comment: "The rain was so heavy that the plane crashed... This is terrible... Noi Bai."
About 15 minutes later, knowing that the information she posted was incorrect, Ms. M. deleted the photos and comments. However, because Ms. M. used her personal Facebook page to sell products online, in a short time, the above information was read and shared by many people, causing public confusion.
The police agency determined that Ms. PTM had signs of violating point g, section 3, Article 66, Decree 174/2013/ND-CP on "providing, exchanging, transmitting or storing, using digital information to threaten, harass, distort, slander, or insult the reputation of an organization, or the honor, dignity, or reputation of others."
Currently, PC50 has transferred the case file to Thanh Xuan District Police to take administrative sanctions against Ms. M's violation. According to regulations, Ms. M's violation will be fined from 10-20 million VND./.
