Russia prioritizes upgrading strategic bombers

“We will continue to discuss the tasks of developing the fleet of strategic aircraft Tu-160 and Tu-95MS. These aircraft are an important factor in the country’s nuclear potential,” Shoigu said at a conference call at the Defense Ministry.

The head of the Russian Defense Ministry said that these planes carry out regular flights within the framework of the nuclear deterrent plan in the Arctic and Black Seas as well as in the eastern regions.

“That is why extending the service life of missile-carrying aircraft and increasing their combat effectiveness are among our top priorities. Currently, the Tupolev Joint Stock Company is modernizing these aircraft together with production enterprises, repairing aircraft engines, on-board equipment and reproducing new units and lines,” General Shoigu stressed.

The Tu-160 is a strategic bomber equipped with cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, designed for the Soviet Air Force. Together with the Tu-95MS missile carrier, the Tu-160 forms part of Russia's strategic nuclear forces, along with land-based and submarine-based missile systems./.
