Premier League leader: 'Neymar case is an unusual event'

August 10, 2017 06:39

Head of the organizing committee of England's number one football tournament, Richard Scudamore, is pleased that the "blockbuster" Neymar is not related to any member club.

"There's a limit where you really should say no. I'm glad it wasn't an English team that made this record transfer fee," Scudamore told Sky Sports about PSG spending $263 million to help Neymar break his contract with Barca.

"I think it's an unusual series of events," the Premier League chief explained. "Qatari, the group that owns PSG, suddenly wanted to show off. The release clause was created to prevent players from leaving but they did the opposite. At the moment I'm happy because no English club has spent that much money on a player."

The Premier League has spent the most money on players for many years. In the summer of 2016, they set a record of 1.56 billion dollars on player reinforcements. This summer, the figure has exceeded 1.1 billion dollars and may break the old record with more than 20 days left in the transfer market.

Scudamore (left) does not support Premier League clubs spending money to break contracts like PSG did to snatch Neymar from Barca.

"The revenue in football is growing. Clubs have money from image rights and global attention," added Mr Scudamore. "They have revenue and continue to invest in players. Fans want to see that. But rest assured, we have laws in place to help clubs develop sustainably."

Man City is the biggest spending club in England this summer with $245 million.
