Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan began a three-day visit to Hong Kong on Tuesday, marking the 20th anniversary of the island's return to Chinese rule and attending the swearing-in ceremony of the new government in the special administrative region.

Mr. Xi will tour the West Kowloon Cultural District, while first lady Peng Liyuan will visit a kindergarten in Kowloon Tong, according to WeMedia01.

A parent whose child attends a kindergarten in Kowloon Tong said on a Hong Kong social media account that teachers asked students to wear neat uniforms and red hair clips when Ms. Peng arrived.

At around 10am this morning, Hong Kong police began patrolling around the kindergarten, using sniffer dogs to check surrounding homes and vehicles. Hong Kong police also entered the school to provide security, with at least three police officers stationed on each staircase in the school.

WeMedia01 sources said a team of 20 students, 10 boys and 10 girls, had been selected to perform when Ms. Bang arrived. The school has 70 teachers and staff, and the campus can accommodate 1,300 students with a playground, music room, computer room, dance room, library, and nursery.

Xi is scheduled to attend a welcome banquet tonight hosted by Hong Kong's outgoing chief executive Leung Chun-ying. In the following days, the Chinese president will inspect a People's Liberation Army barracks and visit several construction projects in the city.

On July 1, Mr. Xi attended the swearing-in ceremony of the elected chief executive of the special administrative region, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, and members of the cabinet.

Hong Kong is under heavy security ahead of the July 1 anniversary celebrations. Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" policy.
