(Baonghean.vn) - On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Day of War Invalids and Martyrs (July 27, 1947 – July 27, 2017), let's listen again to timeless songs written by famous composers about the soldiers who bravely sacrificed themselves for the Fatherland and the veterans who still maintain the spirit of a soldier in peacetime.

1. Red flower color

The late composer Thuan Yen set this song to music based on the poem of the same name by poet Nguyen Duc Mau. "The Red Flower" symbolizes the resilience of the Vietnamese people, united in their fight against invading enemies.

The song possesses both lyrical and tragic qualities, evoking strong emotions in listeners. And especially, when listening to "The Color of Red Flowers," every Vietnamese person feels a sense of national pride in every breath.

Although the song was created during the most brutal period of the American imperialist war, it instilled in the entire nation a belief in ultimate victory. "The Red Flower" is the halo of victory that the author envisioned.

And that became a reality: on April 30, 1975, the South was liberated, and the beautiful land of the three regions was reunited.

2. Young grass of the ancient citadel

"Young Grass on the Ancient Citadel" is a song composed by musician Tan Huyen in early 1990. He wrote this song during a field trip to Quang Tri to gather material for a song about the war. Standing on the land where many of our soldiers bravely sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland, musician Tan Huyen looked up at the spring sky and seemed to want to take in the vast, clear blue expanse of the sky with his eyes.

The song is an epic ballad recreating the heroic struggle of our ancestors in the fight for independence and freedom. Composer Tan Huyen completed the song within a week, and when he sang it, everyone present was moved to tears.

3. The Unforgettable Song

Composer Pham Minh Tuan – the author of the song "The Unforgettable Song" – is a soldier. He spent 15 years on the harsh battlefield, witnessing firsthand the hardships of Vietnamese soldiers, seeing and digging graves for his comrades who bravely fell for their country, and, more painfully, having to bury his own 4-month-old child because of the war.

Although many artists have performed the song "The Unforgettable Song," perhaps singer Cam Van is the one who has sung it most successfully. The renowned singer recounted that many people cried when they heard her sing, and she herself couldn't hold back her tears many times.

4. Round footprints in the sand

"Round Footprints on the Sand" is a song about war veterans that has gained widespread popularity. Composed by musician Tran Tien, it depicts the journey of a soldier returning home after the war. Despite bearing the wounds of the brutal conflict, he still manages to go to the village school every day with his crutches to teach the children songs of his homeland.

The song is based on a true story about a wounded soldier in the fishing village of Tien Hai (Thai Binh province).

5. The Legend of the Mother

"Legend of the Mother" is a classic song by the late composer Trinh Cong Son about the heroic Vietnamese mothers. The song was composed by the late composer when he visited a museum in Quang Binh in early 1984.

Upon seeing the photograph of Mother Suốt – who bravely rowed her ferry across the river under a hail of bombs and bullets, transporting soldiers during the years of resistance against the American war of destruction – the late musician was deeply moved. This experience prompted Trịnh Công Sơn to compose the song "Legend of Mother," expressing his heartfelt respect for the silent sacrifices of Vietnamese mothers during wartime.
