The Russian embassy in Damascus, Syria, was shelled yesterday but there were no casualties.

A shelling incident occurred in the capital Damascus, Syria on July 16, injuring 7 people. According to the SANA news agency, two shells were fired at the Russian embassy area, one hit the embassy building, the other fell in a nearby area, causing material damage.

The incident took place in the context of government troops continuously shelling rebel-held areas near Damascus for many days. Rebel forces in the suburbs of the Syrian capital have previously attacked the Russian embassy.

Russia strongly supports the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and began intervening in the country's civil war in September 2015. According to a report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the civil war has so far killed 475,000 people, including 99,617 civilians.
