Hai Phong stops Do Son buffalo fighting festival

The city decided to stop the Do Son buffalo fighting festival and check for stimulants and energy enhancers remaining in the fighting buffaloes.

Buffalo number 18 is currently tied up in the area behind the stadium under the guard of Do Son district police and military.

On July 2, Mr. Nguyen Kim Pha, Chief of Office and Spokesperson of Hai Phong City People's Committee, said the city decided toDo Son buffalo fighting festival 2017 was stopped after the incident of buffalo number 18 goring its owner, Mr. Dinh Xuan Huong in Van Huong ward, Do Son district, to death in the qualifying round.

The city requested the People's Committee of Do Son district to organizeCheck for remaining stimulants and energy enhancers (if any) in buffalo number 18 and other buffaloes participating in the qualifying round;Report results and remedial measures before July 4.

Mr. Pha said that after goring its owner to death, buffalo number 18 was locked behind the Do Son district stadium and handed over to the police and military for guarding. Currently, the authorities have not been able to approach it to conduct testing procedures to see if it was using stimulants or not, because it is very aggressive.

"Seeing the buffalo tied up and lying there was very pitiful, but given its ferocious nature, the authorities and the victim's family decided that the last resort was to kill it," said Mr. Pha.

Earlier on the morning of July 1, at the qualifying round of the 2017 Do Son District Buffalo Fighting Festival, 32 buffaloes participated in 16 matches. In match 14, buffalo number 18 gored its owner, Mr. Dinh Xuan Huong, right in the fighting arena. Mr. Huong died after many hours of emergency treatment.

The Do Son buffalo fighting festival (Hai Phong) has existed since ancient times, to pray for favorable weather, good crops, and full boats of fish and shrimp after each trip at sea. The festival was interrupted during the war, but was restored in 1989.

After the qualifying round, the fighting buffaloes will participate in the final round held on the 9th day of the 8th lunar month.
