On Sunday afternoon, in the space filled with the aroma of coffee, a special group of 20-30 people attracted all eyes in the shop. It was also difficult to ignore the group of friends when in the group appeared many Westerners living and working in Nghe An. And they were members of the English Club in Vinh City, a club that was newly established 3 months ago.

Talking to a group of friends, Bradley from England talked about his journey to Vietnam as well as Vietnamese cuisine.

One of Bradley’s impressive dishes is pho cuon, a dish that Bradley describes as “wonderful” in Vietnamese cuisine. Bradley has traveled to many places and enjoyed many dishes, but this is his favorite dish. Talking to Bradley, many young Vietnamese people also shared how to make pho cuon as well as delicious places to eat in Vinh city.

Mr. Dang Dinh Binh said that the club was organized by him and Matthew, an English teacher. Since its inception, the club's activities can be divided into two phases: the first phase was around November 2016, but it started having an official name and operating regularly and consistently 3 months ago.

Unlike other English clubs in the city, English Club in Vinh City was initially established almost spontaneously and in the spirit of people finding each other. Originating from the desire to communicate better with foreigners of young people working in the bartending profession, from sharing information about the working environment, how to adapt to life in Vinh City among foreigners, everyone agreed to meet on a day to support and help each other. From the initial meetings with only more than 10 people, over time, the number of people gradually increased.

“At that time, Matthew and I came up with the idea of creating an open club for everyone to join. Since it is an open club, the discussion topics are also very open. You can exchange with each other about your own experiences, life experiences, eating experiences, etc. In short, whoever has any interesting stories can share with each other and of course, completely in English,” said Mr. Binh.

Club participants will learn how to practice listening, speaking, imitating intonation, pronunciation, and expressing emotions of foreigners.Photo: Chu Thanh

The most foreigners who come to the club are from the Philippines, England, and America. 70-80% of them are teachers, the remaining 20-30% are tourists... Because it is an open club, foreigners may only appear when they have free time and may leave when they are busy.

Mr. Binh emphasized that the club is a place for exchange, not a classroom, so there will be no things like correcting pronunciation or giving topics in advance. Those who join the club will learn how to practice listening, speaking, imitating the intonation, pronunciation, and expression of emotions of foreigners. And this is also the fastest way to learn English communication for those who love this language.

Because it is English communication, the age of the club is also limited. Young people from 16 years old and up can join because they have enough thinking to discuss broad topics about their own orientation and past experiences. As for younger people, if they join, there will be a difference in thinking, making it difficult to keep up with the conversation with everyone.

With the criteria of fun, wanting people to get rid of shyness when communicating with strangers, English Club in Vinh City is a playground, a new form of learning English for those who love English in Vinh City./.
