North Korea launches missile towards Japan

North Korea launched a missile towards northern Japan, Reuters news agency reported, citing Japanese media.

Japanese authorities warned local residents and asked them to take precautionary measures, the news agency said.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has been tense after the US and North Korea exchanged heated statements. North Korea has promised to launch ballistic missiles towards the island of Guam, where the US Andersen Air Force Base and Apra Harbor naval base are located.

US President Donald Trump has promised that if North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "does something to Guam, North Korea will have an event the likes of which nobody has ever seen before."
