SEA Games 29: Thúy Vi 'opens the scoring' with a Gold Medal.
(Baonghean.vn) - After four unsuccessful days of competition, the pressure to win gold medals weighs heavily on the Vietnamese wushu athletes. With 9.67 points in the wushu sword event, Duong Thuy Vi surpassed the Malaysian athlete Eyin Phoon (9.63) to win the first gold medal for Vietnam.
Duong Thuy Vi (born in 1993) is the reigning SEA Games champion in this event for two consecutive editions, 2013 and 2015. This is Duong Thuy Vi's third consecutive gold medal at the SEA Games. She is also the reigning ASIAD 2014 champion in the women's combined sword and fist event. Prior to that, at the 2013 World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Thuy Vi won the women's fist event.

After failing to win gold medals in archery and the marathon, the hopes of the Vietnamese sports delegation for a gold medal rested entirely on the shoulders of wushu's "golden girl," Thúy Vi, in her sword performance. Having already won over 60 medals in various competitions, competing against the host country's athlete, Eyin Phoon, was a real challenge for Thúy Vi.
Thuy Vi's confident and extremely impressive performance convinced all the judges, who awarded her the highest score of 9.67 points, surpassing even the host country's athlete Eyin Phoon (9.63 points), thus winning the first gold medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 29th SEA Games. This is Duong Thuy Vi's third consecutive gold medal at the SEA Games. According to the Vietnamese wushu team's coaching staff, Thuy Vi's 0.4-point lead over her home opponent was no easy feat.
Interestingly, at the 2013 SEA Games, Duong Thuy Vi was also the first to win a gold medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation, and at the 2014 Asian Games, Duong Thuy Vi was also the first (and only) gold medalist for the Vietnamese sports delegation.
Reportedly, after winning the first gold medal for the wushu team and the opening gold medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 29th SEA Games, Thuy Vi is still competing in the spear technique event and is expected to win another gold medal.
