Duong Thuy Vi (born in 1993) is the reigning SEA Games champion in this event for two consecutive editions, 2013 and 2015. This is Duong Thuy Vi's third consecutive gold medal at the SEA Games. She is also the reigning ASIAD 2014 champion in the women's combined sword and fist event. Prior to that, at the 2013 World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Thuy Vi won the women's fist event.

After failing to win gold medals in archery and the marathon, the hopes of the Vietnamese sports delegation for a gold medal rested entirely on the shoulders of wushu's "golden girl," Thúy Vi, in her sword performance.
