Rejecting both countries’ claims that the exercises were purely defensive, the spokesman criticized the US military for having nuclear-armed strategic bombers on the Pacific island of Guam, and nuclear-powered aircraft carriers ready for action in waters off the Korean Peninsula. North Korea also criticized other US allies, including Britain and Australia, warning that they “will meet a tragic end if they play with fire.”
The latest announcement from KCNA was in response to the 10-day joint US-South Korea military exercise, called “Ulchi Freedom Guardian,” which began on August 21 in South Korea.
