Recognize blood-sucking mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever

The Aedes mosquito is the vector of dengue fever and usually bites people during the day, especially in the morning from 8am to 10am. Recognizing the characteristics of this mosquito and avoiding being bitten is the best way to prevent dengue fever.

According to documents from the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health, the identifying characteristics of the Aedes aegypti mosquito are that it is black; its legs, body, and abdomen have distinct black and white stripes, so it is often called the tiger mosquito.

In particular, the chest area has white scales arranged in rows, and on the back is a white two-stringed instrument shape. This type of mosquito is capable of carrying the dengue virus and transmitting it from one person to another through biting and sucking human blood.

Aedes mosquitoes often live indoors, near people, resting in dimly lit areas, often in dark corners or nooks in the house, on clothes, blankets, clotheslines and household items.

Female Aedes mosquitoes usually bite people during the day, most strongly in the early morning and late afternoon. In particular, they fly very fast, if they find prey, they will immediately bite and suck blood; at the same time, they stick to their prey very persistently and only fly away when they have sucked enough blood.

The blood-sucking activity of this mosquito depends on the environmental temperature. If the environmental temperature is below 23 degrees Celsius, the mosquito is almost unable to suck blood. Therefore, Aedes mosquitoes often develop most strongly in the rainy season, hot and humid weather, when the average monthly temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius.

The development cycle of the Aedes mosquito from egg laying to larvae is on average 7 days; the development time from larvae to adult mosquito takes only about 2 to 3 days. Female mosquitoes that specialize in sucking human blood can live from 20 to 40 days.

Aedes mosquitoes often lay eggs and reproduce in ponds, puddles or clean water containers in and around the house such as water tanks, jars, pots, urns, wells, tree holes... objects or waste containing water such as flower vases, water bowls, tires, coconut shells...

The breeding of Aedes mosquitoes can be prevented by not allowing mosquitoes to lay eggs and develop into larvae. Specifically, cover water containers tightly, with clean water containers you can release fish to eat larvae, change the water regularly about every 7-10 days; clear the bushes, clean the environment to prevent mosquitoes from having a place to rest.

When mosquitoes are active at high density or when there is a dengue fever epidemic, it is necessary to use mosquito-killing chemicals such as malathion, permethrin..., spray ULV (ultra-low volume) in the form of mist to kill adult mosquitoes.
