Recalling the old days, when Mr. Thai's father was young, working as a journalist, he was passionate about researching, writing and participating in revolutionary activities. In 1967, he was assigned to work in the Quang Ngai battlefield and was exposed to herbicides used by the US military. Not knowing that he had been exposed, after returning to his family, his wife became pregnant with their third child, Mr. Thai.

However, it was not until Thai was born, with both arms and legs weak and his lips deformed, that the couple was shocked. Knowing that their son was infected with dioxin that he had brought back from the battlefield, he was in pain, disappointed and blamed himself. Feeling sorry for his son, he took Thai to many hospitals for treatment, but no amount of money was enough.

As time passed, Thai gradually grew up, and his disabilities gradually developed, making him increasingly dependent on his relatives. Realizing that, he felt more and more sorry and inferior. Therefore, he became more and more isolated, having less contact with people. And many times in his desperation, he thought of suicide as a way to free himself and his parents. However, because death refused, his family repeatedly prevented that thought.

A beautiful love story like a fairy tale

Although the chance of a cure is very slim, Thai's family's hope has never waned. Every time she can save some money, his mother rushes to take her son to seek help from all over. Although the results she receives cannot make her mother happier, in return, thanks to such trips, he feels more comfortable, relieved and more importantly, he has many new friends to have faith in life. They are the source of spiritual encouragement that helps him overcome his inferiority complex and self-pity. And like a predestined relationship from a previous life, among those friends there is a girl who makes his heart flutter. That girl is Hoang Thi Tam, born in 1972.

“Tam is 4 years younger than me. She is my sister’s best friend, and her house is in the next commune. Because I was sick, my siblings’ friends often came to visit. Tam was the same. At first, Tam only occasionally came to visit her sister, and she spent some time asking about me and encouraging me. But later on, Tam showed more and more concern and spent more time talking to me. That’s why my parents and sister considered Tam as a family member. And just like that, time passed, Tam was a source of encouragement and sharing, making me feel like my heart was awakening, wanting to live and wanting to live. And perhaps that made me feel like I knew how to love and care…”, Mr. Thai confided.

Although he loved her, Thai did not dare to express his feelings, so he could not sleep at night thinking about the gentle and caring village girl. And the reason he gave was that the contrast between the two was too great. Tam was pretty, gentle, from a well-educated family, while he was just a cripple, unable to speak, and had to depend on others. But feelings were not something that could be hidden forever...

“Because my sister was always attentive, she had long realized that I liked Tam. Therefore, she tried to nurture and create opportunities for Tam to come home to visit more often. Later, when Tam and I became closer, I began to confide and confess my feelings that I had kept hidden for a long time, although deep down, I was mentally prepared for rejection. But surprisingly, my hesitant but completely sincere words were received by Tam with emotion and love. It turned out that Tam had secretly loved me for a long time,” Mr. Thai recounted.

Then time passed, the feelings of two opposite people grew until the day they felt they could not live without each other. But once again, worries tormented Thai's mind when he was sure that Tam's parents would strongly oppose this marriage. But what could he do when he and Tam already loved each other.

Finally, after many sleepless nights, he decided to leave his hometown so that Tam could forget him and accept being the wife of someone better than him. Thinking that the plan would succeed, Thai packed his bags and quietly left. But he did not expect that Tam knew about it and held him back.

When she met him, Tam only said: "No matter where you go, I will always love and wait for you. I know that you are afraid that my parents will oppose us being together, but I believe that my parents will love me and accept me to follow my heart's wishes."

Who would have thought that he would listen and stay with Tam to persuade his parents to accept the engagement. And more surprisingly, Tam's parents quickly agreed when they heard their two children's wishes, although deep down Tam's mother still felt a bit worried about her daughter's future. But perhaps because they loved their daughter and understood her wishes, they quickly agreed.
