Nghi Loc: Avoiding natural disasters in winter crop production

(Baonghean.vn) -To produce winter crops effectively, Nghi Loc district (Nghe An) has taken many measures to avoid natural disasters.

Peanuts are one of the two main crops that Nghi Van commune focuses on producing in the winter crop this year, with an area of 60 hectares. Due to the low resistance of peanuts to storms, the commune directed 19 hamlets to sow early in August.

Accordingly, peanut producers have taken the time to complete sowing this crop within the seasonal schedule so that when rain or storms occur, the peanut plants will have passed the stage of sprouting and forming tubers, with little impact on productivity.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Vice Chairman of Nghi Van Commune People's Committee said: "Last year's winter crop was 5 days late due to wet soil and heavy rain during the flowering stage, so the winter peanut yield decreased by 40% compared to previous crops. This year, the commune has directed the winter crop production strongly, urging people to produce peanuts within the time frame, not to delay after August 25".

This winter crop, Nghi Loc district produced 2,700 hectares of corn, 400 hectares of peanuts and 900 hectares of vegetables and beans of all kinds. Immediately after the district implemented the plan, the Department of Agriculture and localities directed people to produce winter crops according to the plan.

In the immediate future, focus on producing winter corn and peanuts on fertile land. Next, produce winter corn on double-rice land. Because winter corn production takes place in harsh weather conditions, in addition to seasonal factors, the district's Department of Agriculture and communes and towns direct the arrangement of a reasonable crop structure to avoid natural disasters. As for early winter corn, farmers are advised to choose large-biomass corn varieties for production as animal feed.

Vegetables are also selected from plants that are drought and flood resistant, such as chives and mustard greens. Farmers are interested in implementing intensive farming techniques to cope with floods for these crops.

The family of Ms. Hoang Thi Khanh in Hamlet 7, Nghi Thuan Commune, produces more than 2 sao of chives and mustard greens on rice land. Ms. Khanh said that because the field is low, before sowing, she had to make high beds to prevent flooding. After sowing, chives and mustard greens are covered with a thick layer of straw and dry pine needles to prevent them from being washed away during heavy rains. This method also limits weeds and creates a porous soil, helping plants grow well.

Currently, the entire Nghi Loc district has planted 50 hectares of winter peanuts and 170 hectares of shallots and mustard greens. To produce the winter crop effectively, Nghi Loc district has promoted the work of internal irrigation and traffic; mobilized the entire population to dredge canals, repair the banks of the fields, inspect the drainage works; thoroughly handle the locations that cause water flow obstruction, ensuring the best drainage when floods occur.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quang - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Loc district said: "The district focuses on directing localities to complete 400 hectares of winter peanuts in August. For communes producing winter corn on fertile land, after harvesting summer-autumn rice, continue to plant winter corn on double-rice land, striving to complete corn production on rice land before October 15"./.
