Growing eggplants earns 40 million VND/sao
(Baonghean.vn) - DPreferring eggplant varieties for summer-autumn crop, people in mountainous communes of Quynh Luu district earn a profit of 40 million VND/sao.
After more than 2 months of planting and caring, currently, Ms. Ho Thi Hien's family in Hamlet 10B, Quynh Chau Commune is focusing on harvesting 1.5 sao of eggplant. She said that each harvest yields about 150 kg of eggplant, selling for 10,000 VND/kg, with an average income of nearly 1.5 million/harvest; each month, they harvest 4-5 batches, and the eggplant harvest period lasts from 7-8 months.

“Eggplant is a highly effective crop. If well cared for, 1 sao can yield 3.5 tons. After each harvest, just water and fertilize the plant and it will continue to flower and bear fruit. On average, the monthly income is about 5-6 million VND. If the harvest period is long, it will reach about 40 million VND/sao,” said Ms. Hien.
In Quynh Chau commune, some areas of ineffective summer-autumn rice cultivation have been converted to growing vegetables and fruits such as bitter melon, eggplant, green eggplant, pumpkin... These are plant varieties with high productivity and economic efficiency.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc, also in Quynh Chau, last summer-autumn crop her family planted 1 sao of green eggplant, yielding 3 tons/sao, after deducting expenses her family earned 30 million VND. Entering this summer-autumn crop, her family planted 3 more sao of green eggplant; currently 2 sao are being harvested.

According to Ms. Ngoc, the green eggplant harvest lasts for about 4 - 5 months; on average, 1 sao of green eggplant yields 3 tons of fruit; currently, traders buy at 9,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, which means 1 sao of green eggplant brings in an income of 30 million VND. If the purchase price is stable like that, with 3 sao of eggplant, the income will be about 90 million VND.
Not only Quynh Chau commune, many other localities such as Tan Son, Quynh Tam... are also developing eggplant and green eggplant varieties with an area of about 40 hectares; mainly concentrated in Tan Son commune with 30 hectares.

Mr. Bui Ngoc Truc - Agricultural officer of Tan Son commune, Quynh Luu district said that in the summer-autumn crop, the locality planted about 30 hectares of green eggplant and eggplant, which are not only highly profitable but also purchased by traders at the field. Currently, the above two eggplant varieties are giving farmers high profits. After the summer-autumn crop is completed, the locality continues to direct people to improve the land and plant winter crops to increase income and economic efficiency for each household.
