G/S is an abbreviation of the German phrase Gelände/Strasse, which means the vehicle can run off-road as well as on normal roads. This is the first model of BMW's famous GS series.

BMW R80GS uses a boxer engine with two horizontally opposed cylinders, air-cooled with a capacity of 797 cc with a maximum capacity of 50 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, using a 5-speed gearbox.
