Hurricane Irma hit the Bahamas on September 8, the storm was so powerful that it changed the shape of the ocean off Long Island, but everything is expected to return to normal by the afternoon of September 10, local time.

According to the Washington Post, the pressure at the center of this storm is so low and Irma is so strong that it is drawing water into its core, sucking water from the ocean.

Meteorologist Angela Fritz, deputy weather correspondent for the Washington Post, explained that this could be the result of what she calls a “bulge” in the storm. Low pressure in the center of the storm sucks water in.

The expert also noted that strong winds blowing from the coast on September 9 were the reason why the sea level had not returned to normal.

Some Twitter users expressed concern about the unusual receding of water from the shoreline, exposing the ocean floor, which is often seen as a sign of an approaching tsunami. However, Fritz said the water would not return quickly.

The International Tsunami Information Center says on its website that when the sea level is low, you should not be around it because it is a typical sign of an approaching tsunami.
