Actor Quoc Tuan and his happy return from 'hell'

September 18, 2017 08:44

Actor Quoc Tuan shared that using the word "smiling" to describe his happiness is too light, it should be "overflowing" happiness. The 15-year journey of treating his child's illness has finally paid off.

I heard your son just had major surgery, what was different this time and how did you two get through it?

- This surgery was not successful in Korea 4 years ago. 2 years ago, American professors introduced new technology so I agreed to have surgery in Vietnam. This was the first surgery in Vietnam and thank God it was successful.

How long did the surgery take? Why did you agree to let me have the surgery in Vietnam?

- The surgery lasted nearly 8 hours. When I decided to do the surgery, many people strongly opposed it because Korean and Australian professors said that it had to be done at the age of 17-18. Meanwhile, Bom's upper jaw was sinking inward, greatly affecting his ability to speak and eat, and his face was also affected.

So why did he still take the risk? Was it the strong faith of a father that told him to accept the risk?

- If you don't do it, the older Bom gets, the more aware he is of his weaknesses, and he'll easily become depressed or autistic. But doing it in Vietnam is very risky because even in Korea with modern equipment and good professors, it's not successful.

But I believed in the new technology that the American professors brought over and could not wait until Bom was 18 years old to do it, so I was determined to do the surgery despite the heavy pressure of fear of failure and Bom's mother's objection.

Your mood as you waited outside the operating room this time must have been special...

- All of Bom's surgeries last 6-8 hours of hell, my friend.

- After this major surgery, will Bom have to undergo any more surgeries?

- The important part is done, now all that remains is to do plastic surgery to make Bom handsome. I am extremely happy, especially after Bom passed the entrance exam to the music academy. Many nights I couldn't believe it was true, so I sat up and watched him sleeping soundly next to me. It was so sweet!

Nothing is too important to me after 15 years of terrible events.

Congratulations to you and Bom for finally overcoming all the storms and can rest easy now. I just wonder how long Bom has been playing music and passed the entrance exam to the Music Academy?

- After the hand surgery in 2015 in Australia, I seriously taught Bom to practice playing the piano to soften his hands and see if he really had a talent for music because Bom especially loved playing the piano. The total time to practice for the exam from not being able to read music notes to passing the exam was 1.5 years. It was really amazing!

God really loves you! You know, one day he practiced the piano for 10 hours, and exactly one week before the exam, he lost his mind because he practiced so much. I had to stop practicing completely, but luckily he went smoothly on the exam day, otherwise he would be ruined (laughs).

Now do fans have the right to hope that you will soon return to the screen? And have you ever thought about making a film about the journey you and Bom have gone through?

- Many people say the same thing as you, but making a movie about yourself is... dirty. I probably won't do it, but maybe when I write a memoir, I will.

As for movies, I was thinking of returning to the profession but then the film studio equitization issue happened, and I lost a valuable amount of time. It's really a mixed feeling!

But for me, nothing is too important after 15 years of terrible events. I had to do all kinds of work related to my career and sell the house. And Bom's mother also had to bear the burden.

Looking back on those 15 terrible years, did you ever blame fate or anything? You must have cried a lot for your child...

- Blaming won't solve anything, you have to grit your teeth and fight. If I collapse, Bom will definitely be "dead" (laughs). Before, I never cried, but now whenever Bom is mentioned, I easily burst into tears. I feel so embarrassed but I can't control myself...

What do you want most right now?

- Now I just hope to earn a lot of money to prepare for Bom's cosmetic surgery.

- Thank you and best wishes to you and your father!
